I think of my mother, Mildred
Elizabeth Nelson Sandberg as a woman of faith.
It seems that many times in her life she stepped into the unknown with
faith that “things will be alright.”
When she started country school she spoke only Danish. When she started college the money was unsettled,
but she started because she had the desire and little by little it was
accomplished until she had a degree and a lot of experience.
Accepting the gospel was surely a leap of faith as s he had
never attended a “real” meeting, yet s he gave the gospel her all year after
year.
Moving from the cultural center of the state with colleges,
concerts and other events and going to Potter County
to a cook shack was certainly a shock in many ways.
She was a shy person and for her home to become the social
center for the growing church community was an experience. The only thing I can remember my parents
disagreeing about once was the time the church was taking. But she proceeded
with faith.
Learning to be a widow was another leap of faith, but what
were the choices? She took on the
rearing of 6 children with faith and determination. She moved to town, she sent
us off to college; she started teaching piano for mission money. Then she moved to Zion with new challenges. She became a temple worker, she served two
missions, she loved being a grandmother and went on my trips to do that. I pay tribute to my Mom for living a life of
faith and submission to the will of the Lord.
